Buying tube cane
I'm going to start gouging my own cane later this fall. I need to buy some tube cane, but while I know roughly what the good brands of cane are, I have no idea who's got good batches right now.
Any suggestions would be very welcome.

Grad school for oboe performance
I'm an oboist going into my senior year of college, and I'm very interested in going on to grad school for performance. I know about the top tier schools, but what I don't know about are the less famous schools that have good masters performance degrees. I'm obviously looking most for oboists who know where the good teachers are, but if anyone else wants to offer suggestions of places to look, I'd be grateful for that, too.

hi, i’m a professional composer living in the UK, & i’d like some advice please • i’m currently working on a 5-minute solo piece for oboe, & it uses quartertones throughout • however, usually i sit down with the player to check fingerings etc., but i’m not in a position to do that on this occasion (this is not a commission; i’m writing it because i want to!) • i know they’re possible throughout MOST of the range, but could anyone out there confirm where they are NOT possible ~ i’m presuming at the bottom end of the instrument’s range • i simply want to know at what point they begin to be possible • don’t worry about telling me fingerings, because these vary from instrument to instrument... although, i will be looking for someone to perform this once it’s finished...! (anyone who has a problem with quartertones or complex rhythms should not apply!) •
thanks for your help! =)

name: Teh Oboe (I like to keep my real name private ... )
age: old enough ...
location: Over There, Massachusetts, USA
how long have you been playing the oboe / been in a band with an oboe: Four years.
do you have other oboe players in your band, or are you it: There are four of us. I play fourth oboe because there are no assigned chairs in my orchestra, and I let others get the higher chairs. =P
what kind of reeds do you use, or do you make your own: I modify some reeds, but I make my own, mostly.
do you play any other instrument: Uuugh, tenor sax. Oboe will forever be my favourite, though.
I was wondering if anybody else had heard about Robert Bloom, maybe ... ? He's my favourite professional oboeist, but it seems like nobody's heard about him. Does anybody else have any other oboe players that they like?

| You scored as Woodwinds. You're a woodwind player! Flutes, clarinets, oboes, saxes... You use nearly all of your fingers when you play, and don't quite understand what the problem is when others stare in awe. You have an amazing range and intense articulation patterns, but when played correctly, your instrument can blow people away. Just try not to hit too many of those high notes, yeah? Notable woodwind players include Benny Goodman, Kenny G, and Jethro Tull.|
Which musical section do you belong in?

Ok, I have a problem. Our band is going to festival next weekend and I only have one reed that my teacher makes me. I bought a reed from my teacher but it is extremly sharp. He doesn't like me using it because its so bad. I am learning how to make my own reeds and I have knives. I might practice scraping on some old ones. Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do for brinign the pitch down??? I'm also going to call or e-mail my teacher too. Thanks
